An Open Letter to My Second Mom

Here's a little background to the following post.

When I was 12, my mother passed away from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. Being that my dad had custody of me from a young age, (due to her disease), I didn't spend much time with my mom. Losing her at a young age was so painful and difficult. I didn't realize what I had until it was gone.

I may have lost my mom, but I didn't lose the love she gave me.

My aunt stepped in after my mom's passing and basically took me in as her own. To this day, I'm considered her fifth child.

My mother's love was passed on to me through the affection and support of my aunt. She grabbed the bull by the horns and decided to help my dad raise me. And I'll tell you what, I gave her a run for her money.

Dear Auntie Doodie Head,

Thank you. Thank you so much. You took me under your wing and gave me everything Mom couldn't. You've taught me some of the most valuable lessons about life and love. You really are my hero.

Every time we talk about the hardships that you faced as a child and young adult, I begin to count my lucky stars for the life I was given. Your dark and scary past has given you the strength and courage to find the good in life. I look up to you for that.

I know I can come to you for anything, and I know you won't judge me. I trust you with all of my secrets.

I know Mom is looking down at us with a smile because she sees that you've continued to love me just the same as she did. You stepped up to the plate when you didn't have to, and my life has forever been changed for that.

I hope that I can be half of the mother that you are to my children. You inspire me to teach others to love unconditionally, because you love all of us the same without hesitation. You're so caring and beautiful. I'm so grateful to have you in my life.

I know our relationship with only grow stronger as the years go on, and I love every minute of it.

Thank you for being my second mom.

I love you.
